Principles of a Safer Space
The principles of a safer space refer to shared practices that museum visitors and staff commit to following.
The museum’s safer space principles promote the safety of everyone using the space and the ability to participate as they are. The relevance of these principles is reviewed annually.
Respect, Human Dignity, and Assumptions
We respect each other and our differences. We strive to be aware of harmful and discriminatory assumptions and their effects on ourselves and others. We do not make assumptions and respect what a person tells us about themselves and how they define themselves. Harassment, discrimination, or racist speech are not tolerated. Human dignity belongs to everyone.
Harassment, Discrimination, and Bullying
We do not speak or act in ways that discriminate against or demean others. We do not treat anyone poorly based on personal characteristics such as gender, age, worldview, appearance, health, social class, or background.
We do not disturb others with our behavior. We respect everyone’s bodily autonomy and the right to privacy.
Participation in Creating a Safer Space
Identities and life situations are diverse — we do not exclude anyone through language. We use words that are inclusive of everyone. Our museum allows for a variety of interpretations and opinions. We listen to each other and disagree constructively.
We help others if someone needs assistance.
We critically examine our own behavior and make changes when necessary.
Photography in the Museum
Exhibitions, objects, and artworks may be photographed without flash, and images may be shared respectfully. Ask permission before photographing other people, including staff. Make clear why you are taking photos and where you will publish them.
Our museum photographs exhibitions and public situations according to good practice and shares images on social media channels, among others. Please inform the photographer if you do not want to appear in photos. We do not publish identifiable images of persons under 18 without consent.
Intervening in Harassment, Discrimination, and Bullying
Contact museum staff if you experience or notice harassment, discrimination, or bullying.
Inform staff if you are concerned about something in the space or at an event, for example, if you notice that someone does not feel safe.
We continuously learn and improve our practices. You can also reach us via email or our social media channels.
